Munroe’s Mills | SD&G Photographer

Have you ever wondered about the past? About your ancestors? Where did they live? What did they do? In 1997 I began researching my family tree.  One of the many things I discovered was where my paternal great great grandparents settled. And this is where… Munroe’s Mills.

A small mill community settled in 1860’s, never a large community with a population of 50. At it’s peak, it had a saw and planer mill, a shingle mill, a flour and grist mill, an oatmeal mill, a school and post office. Two of the mills were destroyed by fire in the early 20th century. It is currently listed as a ghost town but is actually privately owned. The founder’s house still stands and also if memory serves me correctly was the location of the general store and post office. The current owners have been busy in repairs refurbishment and up keep of the house and barns. I eventually hope to be able to do more research and find out exactly where in Munroe’s mills my ancestors lived and farmed. It is the birth place of my great grandfather and grandfather.
